About Us
The Backyard League was founded back in 2003. Russell and Bharat spent the summer talking about politics and trading books, and we found that we were concerned with a number of the same social and political issues. We recruited some friends to help, launched the site, and then set about highlighting the issues we felt were important, conducting interviews, and even headed out into the field to take part in voter registration drives.
Since then the BYL has seen a number of people come and ago. Many of the websites that sprung up in that tumultuous 2003 calendar year are now gone. And, though we’ve suffered some down periods, we’ve managed to make it to 2009 with the same goals in mind. We’re (still) dedicated to providing commentary on sociopolitical issues, including, e.g., educational reform, foreign policy, GLBT rights, and healthcare. And we continue to believe that the government is for the people, and that progressively minded grassroots organizations can make a difference in today’s political environment.
